Project objectives:
The project examines the use of online media and other digital services by Finns and people with Finnish background living outside Finland, focusing in particular on their role in the construction of identity, belonging and nationhood. The project examines expatriate Finnishness and the discursive construction of Finnishness in a global and networked context that is simultaneously defined by contestation and reification of national identities. The research is carried out as a multimethod study by analyzing political texts, media texts, survey results and interview materials. The project offers novel perspectives on how expatriate Finns utilize digital media, while also examining the broader implications of digitalization on expatriate Finnish identity and the ongoing debates surrounding Finnish national identity.
